Thank you for explaining the history of this devotional practice, which is a great example of the power and enduring nature of devotional practices. I have been reading the history for some time, guided by the book written by Rev. Herbert Thurston, S.J. Your account tracks his research. His book and some of the pilgrim accounts that he references are available in translation now through Forgotten Books.

I was just reading Thurston’s book to get some insight into Adam Kraft’s stations and was surprised they took shape so late too. This is a fantastic summary of the winding history of the Stations of the Cross!

Fascinating! I didn’t know the modern Stations took shape so late, although it certainly makes sense. Great insight right in the opening.

Thank you so much for the history of the development of the Stations of the Cross. I was aware of some of it but most of what I learned was new to me.
