Multiple heads, jaws, and arms for a single martyr: medieval relic arithmetic was generous. In the Valencian Country we kept things simpler, "Sant Blai de la goleta", invoked with a pat on the back whenever someone chokes. The throat remembers what the inventory forgets.

I am hopeless in my attempts to use Substack properly. I wanted to attach an image of the “Sveti Vlaho,” (Saint Blaise) the only Croatian ship possessed by Dubrovnik at the time of the Serbian attack in 1991. It seems to be a fishing trawler with a bit of armor and dazzle paint. Not much, but the patron saint preserved his city and the little ship.

The photo is on my Substack.
